Posture and breathing

Notice how you are sitting right now.

Are your shoulders slightly hunched? Is your neck leaning forward toward the screen? If so, it might be costing you your focus and energy.

There is a direct, biomechanical correlation between your body posture and how you breathe. When we sit at our desk or in a meeting and adopt a so-called “tech neck”, we physically compress our chest cavity. This restricts the diaphragm, the primary muscle responsible for breathing, from fully descending.

The result? We default to shallow, “upper chest breathing”. This type of breathing takes in less oxygen and signals the body’s sympathetic nervous system, keeping us in a state of low-grade stress and fatigue.

When instead you sit up straight with your shoulders back and chest open, your diaphragm has the space to pull air deep into the lower lungs. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which lowers your heart rate, clears brain fog and gives you sustained energy.

Let me give you a simple, game-changing tip:

  1. Plant both feet flat on the floor. Keep your back straight.
  2. Roll your shoulders up, back and down two or three times.
  3. Inhale for 2 counts (feel your ribs expand, not just your upper chest) and exhale for 6 counts (feel the ribcage squeezing your lungs). Repeat 3 times.

Notice the difference? You are now ready for your day: your heart is steady, your brain focused.
