Back-to-work brain fog

Do you sense that “back-to-work shock” feeling: going from relaxed holiday rhythms to tight deadlines and a full inbox in less than 24 hours?

Your nervous system feels it too.

That overload, the trouble focusing, the fog: it’s not a lack of discipline. It’s simply your body’s normal physiological reaction to a sudden change of pace.

When your mind feels swamped by everything piling up, don’t push harder. Pause and reconnect with your breath.

You don’t need a full hour for this. A few minutes of reset and rebalance breathing is enough:

  1. Sit comfortably, feet flat on the floor.
  2. Inhale (4 seconds): breathe in slowly through the nose, letting the air sink into your belly rather than staying high in your chest.
  3. Hold (2 seconds): pause to anchor your focus.
  4. Exhale (6 seconds): release slowly through the nose or mouth, letting your shoulders and jaw soften.

Repeat for 3 to 5 minutes.

This 4-2-6 rhythm sends an immediate signal to your nervous system, helping bring your stress response back down and your mental clarity back up.

Before you open that inbox, take the reset first.

How has your return to work been going this week?
